Women's House Herstory

1973 - eight women recognised a pressing need for a multi-purpose women's centre sympathetic to the changing role of women in society.The centre was envisaged as a total service for the community Brisbane Women to advocate for social change and inform women of the many forms of discrimination affecting them daily.

1974 - Federal Govt. funding enabled a Research and Planning officer to work for six months and submit proposals for funding. The Association began at 18 Cairns Street, Red Hill

In September the First WOmen's House Support for womens group opened on a voluntary basis.

1976- Women's House were active members of the Homeless Persons Advisory Committee. This same year Australian Women Against Rape was established the W.C.A.A funding was cut by Bjelke Peterson state Govt. forcing a move to smaller premises.

1978 Funding was re-established for the refuge. After two years of negotiations with the Federal Govt. Women's House were granted only $10,000 for the Shelta provided the Association raise $2,500.

This year saw a picket at the Health Department protesting changes to Medibank which makes health care less accessible for the less affluent in society.

Department of Justice refused to allow Women's House to raffle a cricket bat.

 

 

Women's House was established in 1975 and operates under ther community name of Women's Community Aid Association (W.C.A.A.)
