Getting started

You have made your connection to your Internet Service provider so what can you do now? When you are surfing the web, you can choose from millions of web sites to visit.

A URL is an address on the web. Usually it starts with www., which stands for World Wide Web. Then it follows with something like somewheretogo.com.au, which is made up of the domain name (somewheretogo) and the location of the address.

All countries have something like an Internet code, which will show you the country where the page is located. For instance a URL ending in au means it is in Australia, uk means England, nz means New Zealand and so forth. The only one that doesn’t reflect which country, is the USA which usually ends in .com. You can usually pick where the page originated by the URL or address.

An address, or URL, can be considered the location of a resource, and all items, including you, have an address if they are on the Internet. Just as you have an email address, which is different from everyone else, so too, can there be sites within sites especially if the resource or site has many pages. Each type of resource has a slightly different format address and name, but the three most common addresses you will have to deal with are EMAIL, FTP and WWW addresses.

There are numerous resources on the net, which everybody needs from time to time. The big problem is knowing which resource you need!!!! That's where a Search Engine can help.
